Extracting Documents from Archives

Archives contain one or more items that are compressed to reserve space.  When you activate the archived document from your Desktop, Windows Explorer is launched and the list of items in the archive is displayed within the list view

Use UP AND DOWN ARROW to explore the list of documents.  after reviewing the documents, you're ready to open the archive and extract it's contents.

Use the File Menu of Windows Explorer to execute the extract command.

A dialog opens from which you can select a location in which the extracted items are placed.  The options in the dialog include:

if you're familiar with paths, you can input a path in which you'd like Windows Explorer to place the extracted items.  If you're not familiar with paths, you may want to go with the Browse button.

The Browse button opens a dialog that contains a tree view.  You can select an existing folder or create a new folder on your computer into which the extracted items are placed.

Once again, this is a dialog, use TAB and SHIFT-TAB to navigate among the options. Listen carefully to your screen reader to hear each control identified.

For example, to locate your documents folder:

If you activate the "Extract" button, the items within the archive are extracted and placed in the documents folder.  You can, however, opt to create a new folder within documents into which the archive will be extracted.

To create a new folder:

Once you've selected the folder or created a new folder into which you'd like the extracted items placed, navigate to and activate the "OK" button.   You've now selected the location for the extracted documents and are returned to the original dialog.

Navigate to and activate the "Extract" button to extract the contents of the archived document.  The items are unzipped and placed within the folder you selected.

Windows Explorer refreshes its view to display the folder into which you unzipped the items.  You can now access the contents of the zipped document.
